New Years 2021/2022 in Kyneton
With borders only just reopening at the end of 2021 and international travel not fully on the cards, we celebrate the transition to 2022 by heading to Kyneton with the same group of friends; a continuation of our previous year’s trip to Ballarat.
Summer is in full force, with highs of 37 degrees, so water play is a repeated activity for the kids. Hayfever season seems to have stretched on towards January, which is rather unfortunate. Noses are running, eyes are itchy, so much so that we are all popping antihistamines like tic-tacs while trying to minimise our outdoor activities.
I often remember these road trips by the food that was cooked. It’s often a collaborative affair and I guess that’s the joy of traveling with a group of friends. Last year’s road trip highlights was christmas ham & beef katsu.
The highlights of this trip’s menu consists of nasi lemak and yakitori. We sit around the kitchen counter and skewer the chicken pieces for satay and yakitori, like a bunch of elderly folk, while the kids play around in the living room.
Despite the heat & hayfever, the hibachi grill is used to it’s full potential over 2 days. First for satay, otak for the nasi lemak meal and then the next day for yakitori. On the yakitori night, Noah helps out by fanning the flames in a squatting position, and while going around serving each freshly grilled stick and shouting “yakitori! yakitori! who wants yakitori!”
